Giwayen Mata

GIWAYEN MATA, founded in 1993 by 10 courageous women, is the award-winning, dynamic, soul-stirring, all-sistah, dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble, which celebrates the richness of traditional Africa by exhibiting its exemplary art forms. The ensemble performs traditional, contemporary and original pieces that address issues pertaining to people of color, women, and the environment. Giwayen Mata uplifts our communities and our planet, while perpetuating the cultures of Africa and the Afrikan Diaspora through the study, creation, teaching, and presentation of artistic media including dances, rhythms, songs, poetry, and prose around the world.

The Audience Building Roundtable is a unique gathering of arts organizations whose organic exchanges breath life into the word community as it relates to the arts. I am amazed with how the admin and steering committee directs audience building roundtable members to identify differences and shed light on the vast similarities, which are unveiled during round table discussions. Regardless of budget size, location, art form or patron demographics, there are basic needs that large and small organizations share. It is a rich experience to be able to drink of the fountain of knowledge formed through this round table sharing. I am grateful to have this knowledge base of experts and cohorts through which to grow the Giwayen Mata audience.
